5 Ways to Refresh Perspective

1) Take a step back—We tend to get so wrapped up in specific situations that we sometimes neglect to see the big picture. Explore things from a different angle, and experiment with the notion of objective curiosity. What if you reversed the situation, or turned it upside down? Things are not always as they appear (see photo), so try not to make assumptions, judgements, or predictions. Approach the situation with a sense of openness, discover the humor, and seek the potential for growth. 2) Travel outside your comfort zone—Take a drive to a different neighborhood for lunch. Volunteer at a senior center, homeless shelter, or food bank. Step away from what feels familiar and expand your horizons. Embrace the broad range of what defines “culture” and experience a different way of life.

3) Take inventory—Make a list of people and things for which you are grateful. Acknowledge your freedom and safety. Honor your physical health and abilities, taking nothing for granted (i.e walking, breathing, seeing, hearing, etc). Recognize the ways you are learning and evolving.

4) Connect with nature—Gaze out over the vastness of the ocean. Hike up to a beautiful vantage point on a mountain or hilltop. Or go to the park and watch the industrious ants or bees at work with purpose and determination. Notice how this shifts our self-perception.

5) Slow down—Make a conscious effort to down-shift coming into your weekend, and move a little more slowly. Pay attention to the sights and sounds you may not have time for during your work week. Try to keep your social commitments to a minimum for one weekend, and give yourself a little extra time to relax and unwind at a leisurely pace.
