Ocean Breathing

Ujjayi breath is a form of conscious breathing used frequently in yoga to bring attention, awareness, and balance to the practice. Benefits: Each breath increases oxygen levels and blood flow, improving the circulation of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients carried through the blood. It also helps to moderate the heart rate, which will circulate blood more effectively and improve blood pressure.

Using Ujjayi breath: Constrict the back of the throat to narrow the air passage way, and with the mouth closed, breathe slowly through the nose. Each inhale and each exhale will create a whispering sound similar to the sounds of the ocean. Imagine each exhale is like the waves swelling to the shore, and each inhale is the water retreating back into the ocean. As the waves wash the sand, the breath clears away the cluttered thoughts of our mind. Tuning into and aligning with the sound of the breath (with or without yoga asanas) we are able to cultivate a calming flow, an even rhythm, and enhanced focus.
