Nuclear Chemist with a New Cause
Bob~Santa Fe, NM—Spending much of his life in the Southwest, Bob remembers his mom making homemade chutneys growing up, but only recently began experimenting in the kitchen himself. His career as a Nuclear Chemist at the Los Alamos National Laboratories, during some of the most precarious times in U.S. history, kept him quite busy. Several decades later he retired, and found a renewed sense of purpose in his determination to provide aid and support to people who are hungry and homeless. With a mission to feed those in need and reduce unnecessary waste, Bob spends several days a week volunteering at local organizations. He has also gone beyond organized volunteer work by creating his own way of giving. With each proprietor’s permission, Bob and his loyal pup go from house to house picking the fruit off local trees around town. He then turns the fruit into homemade delicacies—fresh applesauce for kids at the Boys & Girls Club and dried fruit snacks to take to the itinerant workers who wait at the “Labor Park” hoping for a day of work and wages. Recognizing the loose connection between cooking and chemistry, and with endless enthusiasm for his mission, Bob states simply, “I’m having more fun doing it!”
